Women’s bodies…or should I say, my body

Real Women

Summa Flourish™ is a multi-author blog for health care providers and patients to build a social media health community for women and their families. Sometimes the authors educate and other times they express their feelings and opinions. Blogs are real time in that they are interactive. We welcome comments and thoughts; however, sometimes we all don’t agree – and that’s OK.

Last week, nurse Heidi Eve- Cahoon blogged about her New Year’s resolution to “Be me,” which focused on taking care of one’s being through self-reflection and prioritization. The following day, physician Michael Yoo posted on the possible changes a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy and that she my opt to choose plastic surgery to correct changes she doesn’t like.

Not all of our readers were pleased with these contrasting views of self and body image. However, as I tweeted last week, “A gal should always keep her options open.” Do I self reflect and love myself? Yes. Have I had plastic surgery? No. Will I ever? I don’t know. I have contrasting opinions.

A well known proverb states, “to each their own.” In other words, every person is entitled to her personal preference and taste. My teenager daughter would say it another way, “whatever.” Other descriptors also come to my mind. Tolerance. Acceptance.

I am grateful for the conversation, ladies.

I agree in regards to keeping one’s options open. Heck- I took my then 6 year old in to the OR and he had general anesthesia to remove a large hairy mole from over his eyebrow. Purely cosmetic, but so worth it. He will thank me later…and that was the right decision for us. :)
