It is anticipated when you work in an organization as large as the Summa Health System that growth and development are inevitable. In fact, growth is good. It reminds me of the book, Who Moved My Cheese, and how we all adapt to change. So, as our health system changes, so does the leadership. But it’s not always a bad thing.
Recently, it was announced that Dr. Cliff Deveny was moving up and out of Summa Health System. Dr. Deveny has been a beloved leader at Summa for years. Of all the jobs and titles he has had at Summa Akron City Hospital, one of the most important was the Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology – the role I have now. He also had the privilege of training me…poor guy. He presently is President of SPI (Summa Physician’s Inc.) and Vice President of Physician Alignment. Cliff now has an excellent opportunity for growth and leadership in a different hospital system in another state. While we hate to lose him, we should be proud of how he developed here. In other words, as he succeeds, we all succeed.
I wouldn’t be a blogger if I didn’t tell a good story from time to time. I was a resident physician at Summa Akron City years ago. One of the benefits of training here are the opportunities to spend quality teaching time with attending physicians. Cliff would always give me pearls of wisdom (btw, it happened again this week). However, one of the most important facts he reinforced was that we are all equal. It is not important who the patient is or her particular background – she deserves the best systematic quality care. He also elevated me and gave me confidence in my clinical skills. As an educator and mentor, I continue to pass on to others what he has taught me. In addition, Cliff was imperative in recruiting me back to Summa.
Thank you, Cliff, not only for teaching me, but for all you have done over the years for women, patients, physicians and our community. We are indebted to you as a teacher and leader and wish you great success.
